Sing A Mile High International Children’s Choral Festival
Hosted by Young Voices of Colorado, Sing A Mile High is an amazing opportunity. Choirs perform individually on stage under the direction of their own conductors and in massed choir led by world-renowned guest conductors. The facilities for the festival are extraordinary. Housing campus is on the Colorado Christian University, rehearsals are at the Mile Hi Church Event Center, and the gala concert performance is held in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver.
We encourage groups to consider traveling to Denver a day or two early, so the singers can do some sightseeing and acclimate to our mile high city before rehearsals begin. Some directors have found it very helpful to give their students some “fun time” in advance of settling into rehearsals. If you wish to come early or extend your stay in Denver, we will be happy to arrange reasonably-priced housing and meals at CCU for you and help you with your plans.
About The Sing A Mile High Founders and our History
After attending various children’s choir festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe, Chrys Harris and Jena Dickey decided to bring this experience to the beautiful city of Denver, Colorado. Their goal was to offer treble choirs the opportunity to gather for 5 days of collaboration and camaraderie, to learn from outstanding guest directors and clinicians, to achieve excellence in a festival performance, and to perform in the amazing Newman Center for the Performing Arts. They also wanted to provide comfortable accommodations, the security of a small modern campus, youth-centered activities and a friendly environment at an all-inclusive affordable price.
In June 2006, Chrys and Jena saw their vision come to life during the first Sing A Mile High Festival. With conductors Dr. Rollo A. Dilworth and Dr. Catherine Sailer, the festival hosted 9 choirs from 8 states and over 300 singers!
Since that time Sing A Mile High has hosted several other amazing guest conductors including Dr. David Brunner, Bob Chilcott, Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory.
Over the years there have been over 3,400 participating singers from more than 78 different choirs, and several have returned multiple times! Twelve commissioned works have been premiered.

What People Say About “Sing A Mile High”
“What an amazing performance last night!!! We were in awe of how 300 kids could sound so professional after 2.5 days of practicing!!”
Susie Franke, choir parent
“I think this concert was one of the finest I’ve ever heard. The differences and similarities in the choirs were pleasant to observe. I think the audience could see that there is a lot of work, variance, and possibility in this sphere. The massed choir pieces were phenomenal. And no one could have intentionally mixed the apparel for a better effect – they looked sensational, all 300 in their various blacks, whites, blues, reds, muted print, and shimmer. Congratulations to you and the whole crew.”
Gretchen Timmer, collaborative pianist
“What an amazing performance last night! All your hard work was so apparent in the beauty of the kids.”
Cindy Yallop, choir parent
When choosing tours for our choir, we first consider the musical experience. Who will be the director? What opportunities will our singers have to learn from other choirs? Is the festival organized in such a way to encourage building a community with all the singers? Sing A Mile High does all this and more! I especially appreciate the organization that takes place before the visiting choirs arrive so every minute at the festival can be experienced to the fullest!
Sheri McKelfresh, Artistic Director
Northwest Girlchoir has thoroughly enjoyed Sing a Mile High every time we’ve participated. The festival is consistently well-organized, has superior conductors / clinicians and is always so much fun!
SAMH has been a highlight for many of our singers! It’s provides them a wonderful opportunity to sing with quality children’s choirs from around the country. It’s also very well organized-we have loved the experience!
